A rose among thorns.
When ADL Collective was approached by a young Adelaidian designer by the name of Tori-Anne Gill - how could we resist telling you about her? Tori-Anne resides on a farm just outside of a small town called Mundoora which is around a 2 hour drive North from Adelaide, South Australia.
You are not to be fooled by her growing up in a small town which you may presume is far away from anything remotely stylish but in fact, Tori-Anne is breaking all the boundaries and you will become absorbed by her label called Dark Thorn Clothing. In which she focuses purely on details and is awe inspired by the Victorian Era, twisting it up and bringing it back to create timeless pieces. Tori-Anne specializes in using natural fibers such as silks and wool to create her garments. She is also not afraid to use velvet and loves the colour black in her methodology.
Tori-Anne has recently been in collaboration with South Australian Designer Co as well as being featured at RAW Adelaide and Boutique Series The Black Dress which was held at Mercedes Benz. Tori-Anne will feature at the Labels Style Market on Friday the 26th of August at the Hotel Richmond in Rundle Mall. Talk about talented.
At the tender age of 18 Tori-Anne started her label, Dark Thorn Clothing, in 2013 with printed t-shirts and hand made skater skirts in all different kinds of fabrics and patterns. Experimenting with where she wanted to take her label and as she was maturing and finding herself she finally knew exactly where she wanted to go.
Tori-Anne stopped producing anything new for Dark Thorn Clothing for a whole year while she worked on re-branding. Tori-Anne is a self-taught designer having a sewing needle in her hand before she could even speak. Her Nanna is a dressmaker; her Grandmother is a pattern maker and whilst her Mum used to make children’s clothing and still loves to make the occasional quilt- it isn’t hard to find where Tori-Anne gets all her knowledge.
On the 30th of October 2015 Dark Thorn Clothing relaunched with the new anticipated collection Rebirth. With the next collection to follow called New Moon in which the photographs are taken by Magic Memories by Erika, the models are Vanessa Barry and Maddison Chapman, the hairstyles are provided by Eva Lu and makeup is compliments of Yassmin Abdo.
Why is Dark Thorn Clothing so attractive? It is true that each design is 100% Australian made and only made in small batches making them extremely rare pieces for her customers to cherish.
Thus making this South Australian designer one to keep a close eye on in the future.
